RISE in Action: 3 Real-Life Scenarios Where Cultural Intelligence Changes Everything

Have you ever had a moment where you thought, “That didn’t go as I expected,” only to realize later that culture was at the heart of it? It happens more often than we admit. And when we learn to lean into those moments with curiosity instead of judgment, everything shifts. That’s exactly what my RISE Framework…

1. Recognize: When a Patient’s “No” Meant Something Deeper

A doctor in Abuja was frustrated. His patient kept refusing a recommended treatment. Instead of seeing progress, he saw resistance. But one nurse suggested they pause and recognize that this wasn’t simple defiance—it might be cultural.

When the team asked more open questions, they learned the patient’s family needed to be consulted before any major medical decision. In her culture, health wasn’t just individual—it was communal.

By recognizing that layer, the doctor invited the family into the conversation. Not only did the patient agree to treatment, but trust was restored. A moment of cultural frustration became a moment of healing.

2. Interpret: The Silent Room That Wasn’t Empty

Picture this: a global nonprofit held a Zoom meeting with team members from Ghana, India, and the UK. The facilitator asked for ideas, and the UK staff jumped in immediately. But the Ghanaian and Indian colleagues stayed quiet. Awkward silence.

At first glance, you might think, “They have nothing to say.” But the facilitator remembered the RISE step Interpret. Silence doesn’t always equal disinterest—it can signal respect, reflection, or a preference for thoughtful contribution.

So instead of pushing, she added a five-minute “quiet writing” activity. When it came time to share, the quietest colleagues had some of the most creative solutions. By interpreting silence differently, the team unlocked voices that might have gone unheard.

3. Strategize & Elevate: Women Collaborating Across Borders

In a leadership retreat, women from Kenya, the U.S., and the Middle East were brought together for a mentorship program. On day one, tensions surfaced. Americans were direct in feedback, Kenyans leaned toward storytelling, and Middle Eastern participants prioritized diplomacy. Misunderstandings piled up quickly.

Here’s where Strategize came in. The facilitator asked each group to explain their communication styles. Then, they co-created shared norms: feedback would be honest and respectful, everyone would have airtime, and cultural context would always be acknowledged.

But they didn’t stop there. They moved into Elevate. Each group began appreciating the gifts the others brought—directness for clarity, storytelling for connection, diplomacy for harmony. By the end, what once felt like friction turned into fuel. That mentorship circle is still active today.

The RISE Framework at a Glance

Sometimes it helps to see the steps laid out clearly. Here’s a quick snapshot of how RISE works in everyday situations:

  • Recognize → Notice when cultural differences might be influencing behavior.
  • Interpret → Ask yourself: What else could this mean in their cultural context?
  • Strategize → Adapt your approach. Create solutions that bridge the gap.
  • Elevate → Go beyond problem-solving. Celebrate and leverage differences as strengths.

Think of RISE as a cycle, not a checklist. Each step builds on the other, helping you move from awareness into meaningful action.

A Thought to Leave You With

Think about your last week. Did you notice a misunderstanding that might have had cultural roots? What would have happened if you had paused to Recognize, Interpret, Strategize, and Elevate?

That’s the gift of cultural intelligence—it turns everyday interactions into opportunities to build trust and create change.
